Start November on the right track with the Run to be Drug Free on Saturday, November 1st at Pinecrest High School (250 Voit Gilmore Lane, Southern Pines, NC 28387).  The Run to be Drug Free benefits Sandhills Teen Challenge.

Race Information

The 5k race begins and ends at the driveway of Pinecrest High Schools and winds around a closed course.  Roads will be closed from 8:30 am until 10:30 am.  The 1 Mile Fun Run will begin at 9:00 and the 5k at 9:30.  An awards ceremony will follow the race and live music will be provided.

Post Race Results – MANNA in Motion | 5k

MANNA in Motion joined the 2014 Fall Series of the SRS on Saturday, October 11.  The race was held at St. John Paul 2 Catholic School and ran through the grounds of St. Joseph of the Pines.  MANNA is a ministry that provides lunches for needy residents of Moore County.

Geoffrey Washburn won the overall 5k race with a chip time of 16:16.  Geoffrey Washburn has won all of the 2014 Fall Series races.  Robyn Humphrey won the overall female 5k with a chip time of 21:08.   St. John Paul 2 Middle won the overall team awards with a 5k time of 21:46.  For full results click here.

SRS is hosting a meet-up at Reservoir Park in Southern Pines on Saturday, October 18.  We will do a lap around the lake and then have time to meet each other after.  SRS will recognize 2014 Spring Series winners and 2014 Summer Series Participants.

Upcoming Race – MANNA in Motion | 5k

MANNA in Motion joins the 2014 Fall Series for SRS on Saturday, October 11.  MANNA is a free lunch ministry that provides 500 free lunches to the needy in Moore County.

Race Information

The 5k race begins at 9:00 am at St. John Paul 2 Catholic School (2922 Camp Easter Road, Southern Pines, NC 28387).  The race runs through the beautiful grounds of St. Joseph of the Pines and concludes at St. John Paul 2 Catholic School.  There will be post race refreshments starting at 9:20 am.  The awards ceremony will begin at 9:45 am.  Runners may race in teams.  This is a trail race

Post Race Results – Autumnfest |5k and 1 Mile Fun Run

The 36th Annual Autumnfest was held on Saturday, October 4 in downtown Southern Pines.  The feel of Autumn was in the air with perfect running weather.  Over 250 participants showed up for the 5k and 1 Mile Fun Run.  After the race there was an arts and crafts festival to enjoy, a kids bounce house, and a juggler to watch.

Geoffrey Washburn won the overall 5k with a chip time of 16:58.Geoffrey also won the 1 in 8k, the first Fall Series Race of 2014.   Tegan Searle won the overall 5k for females with a chip time of 19:26.  The course centered around downtown Southern Pines with gentle uphill slopes and downhill grades.  For an updated list of all results click here.

Upcoming Race – Autumnfest | 5k, 1 Mile Fun Run, Kids Foot Races

Autumfest is an annual arts and crafts fair held in downtown Southern Pines.  There are several events for runners to enjoy during Autumnfest on Saturday, October 4 including a 5k, 1 Mile Fun Run, and Kids Foot Race.  The event is held in Downtown Park (145 SE Broad Street, Southern Pines, NC 28387).  This race benefits the Southern Pines Parks and Recreation Department.

Race Information

The 5k race will begin at 9:00 am and will wind through downtown Southern Pines and horse country and back.  The 1 Mile Fun Run will begin at 10:00 am.  The kids foot races are free and will take place during the 5k awards ceremony.  These foot races are for children aged 3-12.  Registration for the foot races will be available race day morning.

Post race events will include a juggler and musical performances.

SRS Meet-up | 2014 Spring Series Awards and Summer Participant Recognition

On Saturday, October 18 SRS will host a meet-up run at Reservoir Park.  We will meet in the parking lot around 11:30 am and run a loop around the reservoir.  After the run we will recognize 2014 Spring Series Award winners and participants in the first ever Summer Series.  Everyone is invited to bring his or her favorite dish to share.    The rain date for this event will be Saturday, October 25.

Upcoming Race – 1 in 8k | 8k and 1k Run

Sandhills Race Series kicks off its 2014 Fall Series with the 1 in 8k on Saturday, September 6.  The race benefits the Susan G. Komen for the Cure-NC Triangle to the Coast Affiliate.  One in eight women have or will develop breast cancer in her  lifetime.

Race Information

The race will begin in front of Given Memorial Library in Pinehurst, NC (150 Cherokee Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374).  The 8k begins at 8:00 am.  The course runs through the historic Village of Pinehurst, Rassie Wicker Park, and the Village Arboretum (4.97 miles).  Awards will be given to the overall first place winners (male/female), the first survivor finisher, and age group winners (first, second, and third place).

The 1k Fun Run/Walk will begin at 10:30 am, this race is not timed.  Participants in the 8k are welcome to participate in the 1k.  Both races are stroller and pet friendly.  A post race concert will feature musician Tony Barnes.

Post Race – Turkey Trot | Half Marathon, 10k, 5k, 1 Mile Run

The predicted bad weather held off for the 33rd annual Turkey Trot in Pinehurst.  Over 1100 runners participated in the 2013 Turkey Trot benefitting the Foundation of FirstHealth.  The Turkey Trot began with a 1 mile fun run followed by the half marathon.  There were 393 timed finishers in the half marathon that wound through the streets of Pinehurst and around Pinehurst Lake.  The 5k and 10k began together at Cannon Park in Pinehurst with 717 timed participants.

After the race snacks and beverages were given to the runners and there was also a bounce house for children.  Awards were given to Super Gobblers, runners nominated for overcoming challenges, as well as awards for overall fastest in their respective race as well as fastest by age group.

Chad Ware, 29, of Raeford won the overall half marathon for men with a tag time of 1:12 and the overall female winner was Tana Kornachuk, 34, of Whispering Pines with a tag time of 1:24.  Kornachuk is a repeat winner having won fastest overall female in the 2012 half marathon with a time of 1:26.

The winning time for the 10k was 33:53 belonging to Wilson Pearson, 18, of Pinebluff.  Another 18-year-old, Abby Clup of West End, won the overall female 10k with a time of 39:31.  Pearson beat his winning 10k time in 2012 by 2:77.

Winning the overall 5k was repeat winner Matthew Harmondy, 17, of Southern Pines with a tag time of 16:39.  Emily Potter, 34, of Southern Pines won the overall female 5k with a tag time of 18:36.

Upcoming Race – Reindeer Fun Run | 12k, 5k, and Kids Egg Nog Jog

One of the area’s most popular races, the 7th annual Reindeer Fun Run, will be held Saturday, December 7 in historic downtown Aberdeen (100 E. Main Street Aberdeen, NC 28315).  The Reindeer Fun Run will feature the 12ks of Christmas at 9:00 am, the 5k Reindeer Fun Run/Walk at 9:15 am, and the Chick-Fil-A Egg Nog Jog at 10:30 am.  All proceeds from the event will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills.  Over the past seven years $117,000 has been donated to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills from the Reindeer Fun Run.

Race Information

The 5k and 12k run will begin in downtown Aberdeen.  The USATF certified course will feature rolling hills and wide turns.  The 12k will separate from the 5k course after the first mile and will tour through scenic Bethesda and the Malcolm Blue Farm.  The 12k will rejoin the 5k route at mile five for a downhill run to the finish line and after party.  The Chick-Fil-A Egg Nog Jog, for kids nine and under, is a 1/2 mile run that begins at Poplar Street and ends on Main Street.  The Reindeer Fun Run is stroller and pet friendly.  Maps of the courses can be found here: 12k, 5k, and Chick-Fil-A Egg Nog Jog.

Registration fees for the Reindeer Fun Run are as follows:  12k $32, 5k $28, 5k for pets $8, Chick-Fil-A Egg Nog Jog $15.  Participants in the Chick-Fil-A Egg Nog Jog will receive a finisher ribbon, long sleeve tee-shirt, goodie bag, water bottle and antlers.  Runners in the 12k will receive a finisher medal, long sleeve tee-shirt and antlers.  Participants in the 5k will receive a long sleeve tee-shirt and antlers, pets in the 5k will receive a Reindeer Fun Run bandana.  The 12k and 5k will be officially timed.

There will be an awards ceremony after the Reindeer Fun Run with awards for:  Best Group Costume (two or more), Best Pet Costume, and Best Individual Costume.  Running Awards will be given in the Chick-Fil-A Egg Nog Jog for the fastest times and there will be the Rudolph Award for the first set of antlers to cross the finish line.  5k awards will be given for the fastest overall times, fastest times by age group, and the Dasher Award for the first set of antlers to cross the finish line.  Awards for the 12k will be for fastest overall time, fastest time by age group and the Prancer Award for the first set of antlers to cross the finish line.

The Reindeer Fun Run will also have an after race party and a Chick-Fil-A Kid Zone.  The after party will feature live bands,  sponsor and merchandise tables, Mellow Mushroom, funnel cakes, Chick-Fil-A, and more.  For the kids, the Chick-Fil-A Kids Zone will have face painting, pony rides, fun with Santa, music, games and food.  The Chick-Fil-A Kids Zone will be located on Sycamore Street across from the train depot.

Tips from the SRS

  • You can register online, online registration closes Thursday, December 5.  On-site registration and packet pick-up will be available Friday, December 6 from 12:00 pm until 8:00 pm and Saturday, December 7 from 7:15 am until 8:45 am at Page Memorial Fellowship Hall (104 S. Poplar Street Aberdeen, NC 28315).  There will be a collection of cans and coats for the annual K2 Solutions drive.
  • On-site childcare will be provided by RuggRats in the Page Memorial Nursery.  Space is limited so please contact RuggRats to make an appointment (910-695-0014).  A portion of the proceeds will go back to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills.

Pre-Race Festivities

The Blitzen Bash, a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills, will be held Wednesday, December 4 from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm at the Campbell House in Southern Pines (482 E. Connecticut Avenue Southern Pines, NC 28387).  The cost of the event is $50 per person and the Blitzen Bash will be catered by Sly Fox.  You can reserve your spot here or you can send a check with guests names to PO Box 671 Southern Pines, NC 28388.  The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills serve 300 children each day during the school year.

Volunteer training for the Reindeer Fun Run will occur on Thursday, December 5 at 6:00 pm.

Post Race – Old Glory Trail Trot | 50 miler, 50k, 50 mile relay, and 10 miler

The Old Glory Trail Trot was held on Sunday, November 17 at the Old Glory Legacy Foundation Ranch (180 Bowman Road Aberdeen, NC 28315).  The race began at 5:00 am with the 50 miler.  There were a combined 145 runners who ran the 50 miler, 50k, and 10 miler.  Six relay teams competed in the 50 mile relay event.

Connie Gardner, 50,  was the overall winner of the 50 mile run clocking in at a time of 10 hours and nine minutes.  The winner of the 50k run was 17-year-old Mitchell Dudley with a time of four hours and 43 minutes.  Relay team Xx Got the Runs finished in first place in the 50 mile relay with a time of seven hours and 10 minutes. Dustin Siddle, 28, won the 10 miler with a finishing time of one hour and 19 minutes.
